The passing of Henry C. Lee on March 27, 2026, marks the end of an era in forensic science. At 87, he was more than a practitioner—he was a bridge between the laboratory and the courtroom, between science and the public imagination. For decades, his name became almost synonymous with forensic investigation itself, invoked in high-profile trials, academic halls, and popular media alike. He worked on thousands of cases across continents, shaping not only how evidence was analyzed, but how it was explained. His presence signaled authority; his testimony, often decisive. With his passing, the field loses more than a figure—it loses one of its most visible architects. Yet to understand the magnitude of that loss, one must begin not with his fame, but with the long and disciplined path that led him there.
Forged in Exile
Henry C. Lee’s story begins far from the courtrooms that would later define his career. Born in 1938 in Rugao, China, and raised in Taiwan during a period of political upheaval, his early life was marked by instability and adaptation. He trained initially in police science and entered law enforcement in Taiwan, where he developed the discipline and observational rigor that would later define his forensic work. His migration to the United States in the mid-1960s marked a turning point—not just geographically, but intellectually. Like many immigrants, he arrived with limited resources and faced the challenges of cultural and linguistic displacement.
What followed was not an immediate ascent, but a methodical climb. He pursued formal education in forensic science, eventually earning his M.S. and Ph.D. in biochemistry from New York University. His early professional years with the Connecticut State Police forensic laboratory were formative. There, he built a reputation case by case, not through spectacle, but through precision.
Over time, he rose to become Chief Criminalist and later Commissioner of Public Safety in Connecticut, one of the highest positions held by a forensic scientist in a state system. In parallel, his academic career flourished. For more than five decades at the University of New Haven, he trained generations of forensic scientists, eventually founding what would become the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science.
His authority, in the end, was not granted—it was constructed through persistence, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to the evidentiary value of science.

I never had the opportunity to meet him. But like many in the field, I have encountered his legacy indirectly—through colleagues, mentors, and students who trained under him or were shaped by his work. In that sense, his influence is not distant; it is proximate, embedded in everyday practice.
